Smith Residents of Farmerville, Union Parish Louisiana ================================================================================== ================================================================================== Oct. 14, 1872 Farmerville, Union Parish, LA Dear Brother, As Mrs. Lee is going to Baton Rouge, I will try to write to you for the first time. There was a large barbaque here today but I did not attend as Aunt Anna (Anna A. Manning Thornton) was not well enough to go. Lizzie and I staid home and let Ma and Belle go. They said that there was a large congregation and some of the negros were drunk and fighting, one negrow cut another. Lizzie (Elizabeth Callaway) has been grieving because she has to go home, for Mrs. Goldsby has been very sick, and she has dismissed her school. Dr. Roberts gave a lecture last Monday night, and I went and saw him mesmerize three gentlemen. He could make them do any thing that he wished to. I wish that you could be here to go to the concert next Friday night, for I expect it will be a very good one. Buddie, I have to study very hard for Della Cook is trying to get the prize this month, as I got it last month. Mrs. Hargis received a letter from Miss Rosa a short time after her departure. Colie and Ella Hargis came to see me this evening. Little Florence often talks about you and she says "you has gone home". I wrote to Nora Saturday and told her how I hated to see you leave home. The girls often speak of you at school. Ma says that I can have my picture taken soon and then I will send you one. Please have yours taken and then be sure to send me one. Ma wrote to you the 10th by mail, she said that "you must study hard and be a good boy". Willie said that he will learn to write after a while, and then he will write to you. Florence is as sweet as ever and she said that "Bud Jimmie must come to see her and bring her some candy". As it is getting late I will bring my letter to a close by asking you to write as soon as possible. I forgot to tell you that Willie said that he can run a horse. Your Loving Sister. M. E. V.
