Smith, Dear son as it has bin some time since I have written to you I thought I would write you a few lines. This evening I received your kind letter of the 26th on the third. Inst I was glad to here you were getting a long so well in school. We also got your November report. Jimmie you know it did us a great deal of good to see you had two Months report and had not got the first demerit. Go a head my son I know you are as smart as any of the boys That is the report I have heard of from any of them there. I am confident you will do your best. Pa is very proud of your progress. We are all proud to here you are doing so well. If you need anything you have not got for comfort let me know. You know you will get it if I can get it. I hope we will see you come home a smart pious temperate young man some day. I want you to show these boys up here what you have bin doing. I believe you will do it Jimmie. I wrote to you I would send your Pa’s and sisters’ photographs. The weather has been so cold I could not get them. There is no gallery here now so I could not get them this time. Your Aunt Jennie (Virginia Manning?) is here yet she expected to have gone home yesterday but did not get off. Will go home soon. I wish she could stay longer. She is company for us. Crawford and Kate (Franklin Crawford Manning & wife) has moved to the tavern. Mr. Darby keeps tavern I could not get any cook and I had too much work to keep borders. Gus (?) is here. He will stay with us. Mr. Lott (Virginia Manning’s husband?) is here. He speaks of going to the tavern. Jimmie your little brother and sister often speak of you. Florence says “bud Jimmie is gon to bat use to cool your frony and chickens are very nice.” I am going to try and raise lots of chickens for you if nothing happens when you come home. This leaves all well I hope. I hope this will find you in good health. Write me soon and often. Your True Mother. E. A. Smith ###########################################################
