(?) was duly received a short time ago; but you must forgive me for being so negligent. I would have answered sooner; but you must know that I have been very busy, and I am still so; but deem it my duty to answer your very kind and highly appreciated letter. This to my great misfortune, leaves me unwell; but am able to be up. My illness is from a very severe cold which I have been troubled with for some time. We have been having a great deal of rain down here; but you may rest assured that it is not at all agreeable. The river is higher now than it ever has been since 1844. There was a great many breaks in the levee, and consequently much uneasiness is at hand. The water is running down Canal Street from the river, and the general opinion is that the main part of the city will soon be under water. I am thinking of procuring me a raft or a skiff to go from place to place. Your Uncle Perrie (Oliver Perry Smith?) has been down for the last week; but he left this evening; You must excuse the short letters; for I am trying very hard to get through before I return; so I do not spend very much time in letter writing, although I appreciate a letter as much as anyone. You may look for me about the first or the middle of June; for I think I can finish by that time. Wash Boyd is trying for a diploma now, and has been for the last three weeks; so you can what an examination we have to go through. Hoping this will find you well; I Remain as Ever Your Friend, Geo. A. Kilgore Jr. ###########################################################
