Sarah and Jesse were both born near Shiloh in Union Parish Louisiana, and after their marriage, they emigrated to Natchitoches Parish along with several of their kinsmen. ================================================================================== ================================================================================== The Connecticut ancestry of Harriet Massey Shackelford, wife of Joseph Henry Shackelford, of Union Parish, originates with Hannah (maiden name unknown) Potter Beecher, through her son and executor, William Potter of New Haven, CT. When Hannah first arrived is unknown. However, William Potter arrived on a ship from England, name and port unknown, in 1635. The unnamed ship list shows William Potter, 27, wife Frances, 26, and son Joseph Potter, 26 weeks (The Complete Book of Emigrants, 1607-1660, by Peter Wilson Coldham. Generation 1. Hannah () Potter Beecher, will proved April 5, 1659, naming son William Potter executor and asking that he look after his half brother, Isaac Beecher. (Will quoted in full in Genealogies of Connecticut Families, Vol. III, p. 151; it is also reported in New Haven Town Hall Records.) Isaac was the ancestor of Harriet Beecher Stowe and Henry Ward Beecher. Generation 2. William Potter was born in 1608 in England, and died June, 1662 in New Haven, leaving will naming, among others, daughter Hope. The surname of his wife, Frances, is unknown. Generation 3. Hope Potter, baptised 3 Oct. 1641, married 3 Feb. 1663 Daniel Robins(on). Robins was used thereafter. After the Dutch ceded East New Jersey to the British, several families from New Haven, CT, moved to Monmouth Co., NJ, including Daniel and Hope Robins as shown by the land records. This migration was after 1666, the birth year of their last child born in New Haven. Hope died in Monmouth County NJ before 6 June 1709 per will of her husband. Generation 4. Joseph Robins, Sr., born aft. 1666, prob. in NJ, married Ana or Hannah Packe per will of her father. (The Robins and related families lived in Elizabeth Town, Monmouth Co., NJ.) His will names daughter Bethiah whose marriage to John Nation is proved by the will of John Nation and that of his "brother-in-law", Joseph Robins, Jr. in Guilford and Randolph Cos., NC, respectively. Generation 5. Bethia Robins, named as daughter in will of Joseph Robins, Sr., as was her brother, Joseph Jr., was born in Monmouth Co., NJ and married John Nation as shown by will of John Nation (1774 will, Guilford Co., NC) and that of her brother, Joseph Robins, Jr. (Randolph Co., NC....same place, name of county changed). Generation 6. Christopher Nation, named in father's will, birthdate unknown; death date ca. 11 Nov. 1799, (will, Randolph Co., NC) named son Abraham as executor and principal land beneficiary. The surname of Christopher's wife, Elizabeth, is unknown. He was a leader of the Regulator movement but was elected to the Colonial legisture nonetheless. Generation 7. Abraham Nation, b. bet. 1760-1780 per 1840 census Jefferson Co., AL, married Rebecca, reported to be a Cherokee Indian, date unknown. This couple moved to SC (1810-1820 censuses) where daughter Mary Nation married James Massey as both couples moved from the part of Old Pendleton District, South Carolina which is now Oconee County SC to Jefferson Co., Alabama both couples were admitted by letters to Old Canaan Baptist Church of Elyton, Jefferson Co., AL (now moved to Bessemer, AL) but still active. Generation 8. Mary Nation was born on 1 May 1794 and died 10 January 1875, per her tomb in the Smithson Cemetery, Birmingham, AL. (Two of her children married Smithsons.) Her husband, James Maynard Massey, born in Maryland, died with will in 1860. Generation 9. Harriet Massey Shackelford, b. 1 Feb. 1828, married Joseph Henry Shackelford b. 24 June 1826, both born in Jefferson Co., Alabama. Harriet died 29 Dec. 1888; her husband d. 26 Aug. 1910, both buried in the Mt. Olive Cemetery west of Shiloh (Cemetery Records, Union Parish Louisiana).
