Hudson ================================================== From the 1939 issue of the Farmerville "Gazette" ================================================== "Rev. George Everett, born in 1797 [sic] in Alabama [sic], an early settler of Union Parish, was one of the famous preachers in the early development and history of the parish. He came to this section in the early 40s and settled at Oakland, then called Union Cross Roads. He is credited with being instrumental in the founding of several churches in the parish and is remembered by several old settlers for some of his sermons." The newspaper article contains several errors. Everett's tombstone gives his year of birth as 1798, not 1797, and he was born in North Carolina, not in Alabama. Finally, he did not move to Union Parish in the early 40s, but rather in 1848, after his wife's death in 1847. Rev. George Everett is buried in Springhill Cemetery. His tombstone remained standing until about 1985, when it broke off at the base. It reads: "Rev. George Everett Born in Rockingham Co. N.C. June 23d 1798, Ordained to the Gospel Ministry in the Oakmulgee Baptist Church Perry Co. Ala. Sept. 30th 1831, Departed this life in Union Co. Ark. June 25th 1855, Aged 57 Years & 2 Days. And for nearly twenty four years a faithful Minister of Jesus Christ. Gone home to that eternal rest. That awaits the people of God. There to be forever blest. In that glorious abode."
