On Friday, April 6, 1923, a man stopped and asked for some cigarettes or smoking tobacco. When Auld was in the process of getting the product, the man drew a revolver and fired two shots at Aulds, hitting him in the neck and chest and killing him instantly. The man then drove off and soon afterwards committed suicide. Auld's widow, Lydia Ella Day Auld, took over for him as postmistress and served for several years. ###########################################################
