Among the young attorneys of Union parish, La., there are none who hold a higher place at the bar, or is a more careful or accurate adviser or logical reasoner than L. E. Thomas, who was born in the parish in which he now resides on September 23,1866, the only child born to B. B. and Susan S. (George) Thomas, both of whom were born in Alabama. They were brought to Union parish, La., with their parents in childhood when about thirteen years of age and received the principal part of their education in Union Parish, where they grew up and were married. They have been residents of the parish since that time and his father has been engaged in mercantile pursuits at Marion since 1867. He and his wife are members of the Baptist church and Mr. Thomas is also a member of the Knights of Pythias and the Masonic fraternity. He has never been an aspirant for official position, his time and attention being devoted exclusively to his business since the war. Prior to that time he was engaged in planting and was the owner of a number of slaves. L. E. Thomas was educated in Howard college of Marion, Ala., from which institution he graduated in 1885. In the fall of that year he took a commercial course at Eastman's Business college of Poughkeepsie, N. Y., graduating the same year with honor. In 1887 he began reading law in the office of Judge E. M. Graham at Ruston, La., and in the fall of the same year he entered the University of Virginia, graduating from the law department in June, 1889. Upon returning to Farmersville he was admitted to the bar in June, 1890, at Monroe, La., and began the practice of his profession in partnership with James D. Everett, the firm name being Everett & Thomas. They make one of the strongest legal firms in the parish, and are exceptionally wide-awake and intelligent young attorneys. They have a lucrative practice and are doing well financially. He is a member of the A. F. & A. M., the K. of P. and is chancellor commander of Pelican lodge, No. 17, at Farmersville. He is a worthy member of the Baptist church and is respected and esteemed by all who know him. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Biographical and Historical Memoires of Louisiana, (vol. 2), p. 421.
