They created Wards Seven and Eight in east/central Union Parish, taking portions of Wards Two and Five. Ward Eight was originally shaped like a right triangle: --------- \ | \ | \ | <---Ouachita River Bayou D'Loutre ---> \ | \ | \ | \| <---- mouth of the Loutre on the Ouachita River Original Boundaries of Ward Eight, 1870s/1880s - mid-1900s: Southwestern boundary of Ward Eight: ++ from the mouth of Bayou D'Loutre on the Ouachita River, running along the Loutre to the De Loutre community on the range line between Ranges 1 and 2 East (on the modern Highway 33 between Farmerville and Marion) Northern boundary of Ward Eight: ++ the line dividing Townships 21 and 22 North, a horizontal line running about four miles due south of Marion, extending from the northwestern corner of Township 21 North, Range Two East (located on Highway 33, one mile due north of the De Loutre settlement), running due east to the Ouachita River Eastern boundary of Ward Eight: ++ the Ouachita River, from its intersection with the Township 21/22 line about five miles south of Alabama Landing, downriver to the mouth of the Loutre (a few miles south of what is now Sterlington on the river) The police jury made changes to the boundary of Ward Eight in the mid-1900s, adding much of what was formerly Ward Seven to Ward Eight. These changes enlarged Ward Eight considerably and moved its southwestern boundary to Bayou D'Arbonne. ============================================================================================ ============================================================================================ Sources: Union Parish Police Jury Records Union Parish Federal Censuses and Enumerator's Explanations ###########################################################
