UNION PARISH --- Democratic vote, 1415; Radical, 1. ================================================================================== ================================================================================== NOTE: The above notice gives the results of the presidential election in Union Parish. The lone vote for General U. S. Grant came from Yankee-born James E. Trimble, who had settled in Farmerville in 1859 when he took charge of the school there. He had become a lawyer in the 1860s and became a respected leader in the region. Although he maintained his Republican views throughout the 1860s, the local citizens seemed to accept his views and even elected him as their district judge in 1872. Trimble became a hero due to his actions in 1874, when he stood up to acrocities committed by United States Army officers, hauled them before his court and convicted them. When the Radical Republican governor commuted the sentence issued to the officer by Judge Trimble, he switched parties and became a Democratic. Trimble later founded the Farmerville "Gazette", a newspaper still in publication today. ############################################################# File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/la/union/newspapers/articles/1868election.txt
