McCranie founded the 'Weekly Telegraph' in Monroe, Ouachita Parish beginning in September 1865. In mid-December, he decided to change the name to the "Ouachita Telegraph'. The paper continued publication until and the 1890s or later. ====================================================================================== ====================================================================================== 'Ouachita Telegraph' 6 November 1869 page 3 ====================================================================================== A Confederate soldier named Dixon has just returned from the war to his home in Union parish. It appears he was captured at Vicksburg, where subsequent to his capture, he committed some offense against a Federal officer, for which he was imprisoned, and has just now been released. ====================================================================================== Note: It is not clear exactly who this soldier was. Numerous Union Parish men served in the Confederate Army at Vicksburg, including around 400 men in the 31st Regiment and 100 in the 17th Regiment. Of those, we only have record of one man with the surname 'Dixon', Private Marshall D. Dixon of Company I, 31st Regiment. He was captured and paroled at Vicksburg, but returned to his home and reported for duty in April 1864. Thus, he does not appear to be the man mentioned in this article. Gene Barron has located another Dixon soldier from Union Parish, Private J. M. Dixon of Company E, 25th Louisiana Infantry Regiment. He enlisted in Union Parish on 7 March 1862 in the unit that later became Company E, 25th Louisiana Infantry. His name was mentioned on the rolls of that unit through June 1862. The records of this regiment are extremely scarce, and it is certainly possible that he was serving at Vicksburg during the siege. #########################################################################################
