Democratic Barbecue and Meeting. Welcome to the Standard Bearers. A Liberal Orator Present The Speeches Union Parish Good for Greeley and McEnery Not Five Liberals in the Parish Kellogg and Pinchback Unknown FARMERVILLE, Aug. 24—The meeting of the Democracy held here today was a grand success, although but four days' notice was given. The Democrats gave a fine barbecue, and assembled in large numbers to welcome our gallant standard-bearers. A large number of ladies were present, and many colored people were also attracted to the meeting. Col. McEnery, amidst the greatest enthusiasm, took the stand as the first speaker of the day. His argument was distinguished for sound logic and eloquence. The reception of our chieftain was a grand ovation. Judge Egan, of the Liberal party, followed Col. McEnery. His speech fell coldly upon the audience. Mr. B. F. Jonas replied to Judge Egan. He tore to tatters the argument of the Judge and closed amidst the repeated shouts of the multitude. After Mr. Jonas had concluded, a recess was taken for dinner. Capt. E. J. Ellis, of New Orleans, closed the oratorical programme with one of those characteristic speeches, which always evoke the enthusiasm of his bearers. Put down Union for 1800 majority for Greeley and McEnery. There were not five Liberals in the parish. Kellogg and Pinchback are unknown here. ############################################################# File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/la/union/newspapers/articles/1872barbecue.txt
