I acknowledge that the research of Ms. Lori Peppers, Ouachita Parish Librarian, was helpful in compiling these early obituaries, as almost all of these obituaries come from Ouachita Parish newspapers (Union Parish has no extant newspapers from this era). -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Ouachita Telegraph Friday, 17 Oct 1873, page 2, column 3 "UNION. [From the Record, 10th.] Last Wednesday night, during the progress of the entertainment given by the Coronet Band, just when the performance had reached the height of interest, the audience was suddenly startled by the sharp report of a pistol and a cry of agony from some one on the gallery in front of the building. It was at first supposed that a murder had either been committed or attempted, and for a few minutes the wildest excitement ensued. Upon investigation it was ascertained that Mr. Andrew Cooper, a worthy young gentleman residing five miles east of this place, had dropped his pistol, which, the hammer striking the edge of the gallery, was discharged, and the ball entering the abdomen of the unfortunate young man caused almost instant death." # # #
