Trimble of Union Parish Louisiana Hailed as a Hero in New Orleans From the New Orleans "Times Picayune", issue of 26 November 1874 ================================================================================== ================================================================================== It was with unfeigned pleasure yesterday that we received a call from Judge J. E. Trimble, of the Eleventh Judicial District of Louisiana, a gentleman who has recently been made conspicuous by his manly action in the matter of the outrages committed by Lieut. Hodgson and Deputy Marshal Seelye in North Louisiana. Judge Trimble has illustrated in his own person the promptness with which our people recognize what is honorable and courageous in a public officer, whether that officer be of Republican or Conservative political faith. To him more than any one else are we indebted for the check which the military dragooning in that district has met, and for the publicity which led to the investigation and pending court-martial in the case of that stripped and booted warrior, Lieut. Hodgson. Such Republican officials as Judge Trimble elevate any community, and a prevalence of similar officials would perpetuate the party producing them. He has behaved like a loyal gentleman, and whether he calls himself Republican or Conservative hereafter, our people will always esteem him and be glad to do him honor for the courage, impartially and firmness of his course, at a time when they, his political opponents, needed such qualities most sorely. We are not apprised of Judge Trimble’s mission in New Orleans, but are glad to welcome him and to express in behalf of our constituency the respect of admiration in which he is held by all. ############################################################# File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/la/union/newspapers/articles/1874trimble.txt
