April 1885 Delay of Execution Issued for Perry & William Melton of Spearsville, Union Parish Louisiana

From New Orleans "Times Picayune", issue of 8 April 1885

   The governor sends the following telegram to the Sheriff of Union parish:

   “The Attorney General recommends a reprieve for Wm. Melton and Perry Melton to 
afford him an opportunity to examine their application for a commutation of sentence 
and communicate with the judge and other officials.  A reprieve is therefore granted 
them until further notice, and you will postpone the execution until another day, 
to be fixed by the Executive.”
