Several times the angry contentions of the leaders have promised a reign of terror; but, as it is, the political murders reported make a sad chapter of lawlessness. The killing of Mealey last Sunday at New Orleans had been preceded a few months ago by the death of John P. Neal in that city. At Farmersville, a month ago, Judge J. E. Trimble and J. R. Ramsay were shot dead during a political “discussion,” and a few days later City Constable Lestrappes of Opelousas and a saloon-keeper named Fernburg, both fell dead during a free fight over politics. ############################################################# File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/la/union/newspapers/articles/1888election-violence.txt
