Last Saturday night, about 10 o’clock, Mr. Creath McGough and Mr. James Aulds were shot while riding along the road about five miles east of Farmerville. The former received a full charge of No. 2 shot in the neck, producing almost instant death, and the latter received several shot in the back, inflicting painful though not necessarily fatal wounds. It is supposed that the shooting was done by Mr. S. L. Joiner and his son Sidney. Warrants were issued for them and the latter was arrested and is now in jail. The father has thus far evaded the vigilant search of the sheriff and his posse, who have been scouring the adjoining woods for him, where he is supposed to be concealed. On the night of the killing McGough and Aulds, in company with two or three others parties, went to Joiner’s place for the purpose of chastising some negro hands employed on his farm, and while they were riding away the shooting began. After the firing from the Joiner party one of two men on the other side opened up with their pistols, and several ineffectual shots were fired by the. This is a very lamentable affair. Both the unfortunates, the deceased and the wounded man, bore fair characters. Each was married to young wives. Joiner is the father of a large and helpless family. ----— Farmerville Gazette. ############################################################# File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/la/union/newspapers/articles/1891murder.txt
