D. Everett & R. A. Gibson, Union Parish Louisiana ================================================================================== ================================================================================== ================================================================================== ================================================================================== From the Farmerville "Gazette", issue dated Wednesday, 6 January 1897, page 3 ================================================================================== ================================================================================== Shooting in Oakland. ------ Late Monday afternoon a shooting affray took place at Oakland between Mr. R. A. Gibson and Mr. J. Davis Everett, in which the latter received two wounds from the former's pistol. Everett was hit in the mouth, the ball entering the lower lip and coming out through the neck in the region of the ear. The second shot struck him in the arm. The difficulty grew out of an old feud between the parties. Our informant states that both men had been in Oakland all Monday afternoon, but did not meet until late in the evening, when Everett approached Gibson and renewed the trouble. Simultaneously both men reached for their pistols. Gibson pulled his gun first and fired two shots, with the result above stated. We learn that Everett's wounds are painful, though not necessarily fatal. ================================================================================== ================================================================================== From the Farmerville "Gazette", issue dated Wednesday, 13 January 1897, page 3 ================================================================================== ================================================================================== We learn that Mr. J. Davis Everett who was shot last week by Mr. R. A. Gibson, is slowly recovering from his wounds. Mr. Gibson waived a preliminary examination and was released on a $500 bond to await the action of the grand jury. ================================================================================== ================================================================================== NOTE: Jefferson Davis Everett (6 Aug 1861 - 23 Jan 1905) was the son of Thomas Masipa Everett (31 Aug 1823 - 19 Feb 1894) and Mary Masterson (1835 - 1 July 1871). Everett's grandfather was Rev. George Everett (1798 - 1855), a well-known Baptist preacher in central Alabama who moved to northern Union Parish Louisiana in 1848. Rev. Everett settled near the Arkansas line and helped to establish what is now the community of Oakland (then Union Cross Roads). As a Baptist, Rev. Everett was outspoken against intemperance, and records show that his grandson, J. Davis Everett, was arrested numerous times for retailing liquor without a license. J. Davis Everett continued his dangerous life, and he was killed in 1905 in an attack similar to the one described here. ================================================================================== ================================================================================== File posted at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/la/union/newspapers/articles/1897shooting.txt ################################################################################
