Taking advantage of the new constitution of Louisiana, the police jury of Union parish, in that State, has all fees by the justice of the peace and allowed each one a salary of $7.50 per annum. the constables are not allowed to collect any fees, but are allowed $15 per annum. This only applies to criminal business, and the officers will have to depend almost exclusively on the civil business for their cash. This causes the New Orleans Picayune to remark: “We always realized that many justices and constables in the country parishes were small potatoes, and few in a hill, but we thought they were worth more than that.” ############################################################# File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/la/union/newspapers/articles/1898fees.txt
