Thomas & Duncan Austin, Union Parish Louisiana From the Farmerville "Gazette"; issue of Wednesday, 4 January 1899, page 3, column 2 ================================================================================== ================================================================================== John E. Thomas Fatally Cut. ------------ Tuesday afternoon of last week John E. Thomas and Duncan Austin, both white citizens of the 8th ward, became involved in a difficulty, which resulted fatally to the former. The trouble grew out of some slanderous reports that were circulated in the community, which were chargeable to either Thomas or Austin. The men met to settle the matter, and after a few words they came to blows and clinched. Austin fell to the ground with Thomas on top of him, and while in that position the latter was stabbed in the abdomen. By-standers then separated the men. Thomas' wound was not necessarily a fatal one, but inflammation had set in before medical aid was secured, and so he died on the day following the affray. ###############################################################################
