A. Patterson says that 1898 was the first year since he has been farming that Christmas found him with cotton yet to pick. He finished up Saturday. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sunday afternoon, Jan. 22, the dwelling and smoke house of Mr. John R. Hale, who lived four miles southwest of Marion, were destroyed by fire. Nothing was saved from the dwelling, but most of the contents of the smoke house were saved. Mr. Hale and his family were all away from home at the time of the accident, and it is presumed that fire originated from the fire place. Loss about $500. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yesterday morning while the Spears saw mill at Ouachita City was running at a good speed sawing lumber the boilers collapsed and blew up with great force, the explosion casting debris to the four winds. While the damage done is considerable the News is glad to state that no one was seriously injured and that no lives were lost.
