Cicero Marzette Bearden (16 Nov 1869 - 25 July 1896) built the steamboat himself, and named it after his wife, Rosa Ann Reagan (30 Sept 1875 - 21 Jan 1953). More details are found here: http://files.usgwarchives.net/la/union/newspapers/articles/1895rosa-b.txt The "Rosa B" operated on Bayou d'Arbonne between April 1895 and February 1901. The articles below chronicle the last days of the "Rosa B", before she burned at the Farmerville Landing. ================================================================================== ================================================================================== ================================================================================== ================================================================================== From the Farmerville "Gazette", issues dated Wednesday, 6 February 1901, page 3 ================================================================================== ================================================================================== The steamer "Rosa B." reached Farmerville landing Tuesday night from Monroe, with a fair cargog of freight. Burned. ______ Saturday night about 10:30 o'clock the steamer Rosa B. was discovered to be on fire at the Farmerville landding, and the boat and her cargo of f187 bales of cotton and 450 sacks of cotton seed were destroyed. The blaze originated near the engine room, the flames soon being communicated to the cotton, spread like wild-fire. Capt. Baughman was up at the time of the disaster and he had to hustle around lively to arouse the sleeping passengers and other officers, of whom there were eight or ten aboard. Many of them barely had time to escape in their night garb. The boat had come down Saturday afternoon from upper Cornie, and after taking a few bales of cotton at Farmerville landing remained there to await next morning for departure. The Rosa B. was owned by Capt. O. Baughman. She was valued at $1750 and was insured for $1000. The cargo was covered by insurance. Capt. Baughman left Sunday morning for Monroe to endeavor to procure another boat to take the place of the Rosa B. in this parish. ================================================================================== ================================================================================== File posted at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/la/union/newspapers/articles/1901rosa-b.txt ##################################################################################
