              KILLED AN ARMADILLO.

From J. M. Hamiliton of the Downsville neighborhood, who was in the city today, we 
learn that a few nights ago an armadillo was killed by a gentleman about three miles 
from Downsville. How the little animal got into this country is a mystery. Some 
suggest that it escaped from some show. An armadiillo, says Webster, is so called 
from being armed with a bony shell. An edentate animal of the genus Dasypus, peculiar 
to South America. It burrows in the ground, where it remains during the day time, 
seldom going abroad except at night. It subsists chiefly on roots, fruits and insects; 
sometimes on flesh. Some of our townsmen suggest that it is a forerunner of the Panama 
canal, while others claim that it escaped from the Louisiana Game Commission. - Ruston Leader
