(UPI).. – A 55-year old suspect in the theft of six pounds of butter and six onions shot and killed two unarmed officers who tried to question him Friday, then died under the gun of a third officer. The suspect was identified as Heard Nolan. The officers killed were former Union Parish (county) Sheriff George Miller Edwards, 77, and Deputy Aylmar Taylor, 43. Miller had come out of retirement to help train new deputies and was to quit his post next month. The officer went to Nolan’s home, about four miles outside the city limits, armed with a search warrant. They wanted to question Nolan about a burglary at the nearby Lindville [sic] school Thursday night. Authorities and Nolan opened the door and began firing with a 22-caliber pistol. As the two older officers fell mortally wounded, Deputy Glenn Barron, 30, drew his pistol and killed Nolan. ######################################################################
