I acknowledge that the research of Ms. Lori Peppers, Ouachita Parish Librarian, was helpful in compiling these early obituaries, as almost all of these obituaries come from Ouachita Parish newspapers (Union Parish has no extant newspapers from this era). -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Ouachita Telegraph 10 Jan 1867, page 2, column 4 "In Monroe, on Tuesday, the 8th instant, ELLEN REBECCA, wife of Mr. G.W. Everett; aged 27 years, lacking 9 days. Yes Death, that inveterate foe whom no human flesh can conquer, has entered our midst, withering our hopes and unsealing fountains of tears, by snatching from our embrace our darling ELLEN! The devoted wife, the patient mother and the affectionate sister has left a "vacant chair," and the fireside circle, where the happiest moments of our lives have been spent, is now rudely broken. None who ever solicited alms at the hands of charity, were turned away empty from ELLEN's door. Nor was it given because of a surplus, but from the promptings of a benevolent heart and a christian spirit. If then, "giving to the poor is lending to the Lord," how great is her reward. When I forfeit the confidence reposed in me, when she announced, "I die satisfied to leave my little ones with you," let my Maker forget me." [Note: Ellen Jordan Everett was the wife of George Washington Everett, Jr., son of Rev. George Washington Everett of Union Parish. The Everetts settled in northern Union Parish near the Arkansas line, north of present-day Concord. Later Ellen Everett's brother-in-law, Rev. John P. Everett, was the pastor of Shiloh Baptist Church and founded the Everett Institute, a popular school in Union Parish.] # # #
