L. Cherry of Spearsville, Union Parish Louisiana Farmerville "Gazette", issue of Wednesday, 20 March 1895, page 3 ================================================================================== We are informed by Messrs. J. A. Carroll and R. W. Goyne, of Spearsville, of a lamentable accident that happened near the townof Spearsville last Thursday. A little six year old boy, son of Mr. W. L. Cherry, was playing on a bale of cotton that was headed up, but which was standing in a leaning position. From the top of the bale he crawled off on the side which was inclined towards the ground and as he was small he came down feet foremost and hung to the top of the bale with his hands. The cotton fell over on him and when he was found by his mother he was nearly dead, breathing only once after she rolled the bale off of him. ================================================================================== NOTE: The article above is transcribed as it was published in the original newspaper. However, there is a typographical error - the father of the boy that was killed should be "W. T. Cherry", not "W. L. Cherry". William Travis Cherry (17 Oct 1854 - 10 June 1939) and his wife Martha Ann Heard (6 July 1857 - 3 May 1933) were the parents of Thomas Powell Cherry (10 Dec 1833 - 14 Mar 1895). Tom Cherry was undoubtedly the unfortunate boy who was killed by the bale of cotton. Thanks to Gene Barron for catching this mistake in the newspaper. ###########################################################
