POER DEAD. -------- Mrs. Rachel Poer, an old and respected resident of Farmerville, passed away in death last Sunday morning, the end coming quietly and without apparent pain. For some time she has been reduced to a condition of invalidage from the burden of years of ill health, but on the morning of death seemed as well as usual, aside from a fainting spell early in the day. This had passed off and about noon while receiving a drink of water at the hands of her daughter, Mrs. J. K. Atkinson, she was taken with the chill of death and soon passed away. She was fast approaching the 80th milestone of life and in closing her eyes on earth could look back upon years of earthly trials and vicissitudes met with christian fortitude and motherly devotion, leaving a record of duty, as woman, wife and mother, well and truly done, and in dying has left the world all the better for having lived in it, esteemed by all who knew her best. She was interred in the Farmerville cemetery last Monday evening, a large crowd of neighbors and friends attending the funeral. ================================================================================== ================================================================================== The Farmerville "Gazette", issue dated Wednesday, 21 June 1905, page 3 ================================================================================== ================================================================================== OBITUARY. -------------- Mrs. Rachel Jane Poer (nee Baker) the subject of this short sketch, was born in Lancaster, S. C., May 26th, 1826, where she was married to W. B. H. Poer on June 9th, 1840. They moved to Farmerville, La., in 1847, where her husband died July 20th, 1885. She was the mother of six children, four girls and two boys, of which number two daughters and one son survive her. She was a member of the Methodist church until the organization of the Baptist church in Farmerville, which she joined as a charter member. She was a faithful attendant and lived an exemplary life and regularly attended her church services until her health failed about four years ago, when she rapidly became the victim of old age and ill health, and for the last few months of her life was confined to her bed, but during the closing weeks of her life appeared to gain strength. However, on June 11th, she was taken with heart failure about 12 m., and soon passed away in death. She had told her pastor that she was ready to die and we know that she is at rest. May we be reconciled to our loss, as it is her eternal gain. "Dearest sister, thou hast left us, We our loss do deeply feel, But 'tis God that hath befeft us He can all our sorows heal." Her Pastor, J. W. Elliott. #################################################################################
