He was born in southwestern Lafayette County Mississippi, near the village of Water Valley. His father died in 1857, and in October 1858, Eudocia moved her younger children to Spearsville, in northwestern Union Parish Louisiana. Joe Rockett married Rebecca A. Upshaw (1851 - 1882) in 1869, and after her death, he married Mary Elizabeth Howell (1857 - 1945). Rockett was a farmer, served as a member of the Union Parish School Board, was the 1896 Populist nominee for State Senator and the 1898 Populist nominee for Delegate to the Louisiana Constitutional Convention. He also served as Jury Commissioner and president of the Union Parish Farmer's Union and Singing School ================================================================================== J. C. ROCKETT, GOOD CITIZEN, DIED THURS. ------ We were shocked at the somewhat sudden death of Mr. J. C. Rockett of the Camp Creek community, which occurred at his home last Thursday morning, April 11, at an early hour. Mr. Rockett had been in declining health for several years, but, having reached his eighty-second year, his many friends had thought that it was probably the decline that naturally comes with advancing years. We understand that, shortly before his death, he happened to the accident of dropping a stick of wood on his foot wounding it slightly. This wound soon developed blood poison which became serious and resulted in death. The deceased was a prominent and honored citizen during his long life. He filled many places of trust at public hands, having one time been representative in the legislature from this parish. He was a community builder and a leader in everything that was right and progressive and he will be sorely missed in his community. He was a stauch member of the Camp Creek Baptist Church. Interment was in the Camp Creek cemetery last Thursday afternoon in presence of a large crowd of relatives, neighbors and other friends. [NOTE: Despite what the above obituary states, we have found no record that Joseph Cannon Rockett was ever elected to the Louisiana Legislature from Union Parish. He was nominated as the Populist Party's candidate for State Senator for the 1896 election, and Rockett won Union and Lincoln Parishes. However, he lost the general election.] ================================================================================== ================================================================================== From the Farmerville "Gazette"; issue of Wednesday, 8 May 1929, page 1 ================================================================================== ================================================================================== Obituary. ------ Faithful and patient be my life as thine As strong to wrestle with the storms of Time, As deeply rooted in the soil of love, As grandly rising to the Heaven above. If I had only two words to put on Daddy Rockett's tomb, they would be FAITHFUL and WILLING. He was Daddy to all that would accept his counsel, guidance and protection. He was ever found visiting the sick and we were glad of his visits. After he was unable to help care for the sick he made his daily visits. We that had sick ones learned to expect and appreciate his calls. Words cannot express our great loss - in the going of our dear pastor, Bro. Crawford, and Daddy Rockett, our dear Deacon. Since I can remember Camp Creek Church has never had a pastor appreciated more than Bro. Crawford. They have gone from mortal sight. Oh, how glad to say their influence is here yet! Job asked the question, if a man die shall he live again? Surely he will. When Christ was transfigured, Moses and Elias were seen with Him by Peter, John and James. Luke 9-28-30. Also when Christ was resurrected many graves were opened, and many bodies of the Saints which slept arose and went into the Holy City. Math. 17, 52-53. Our Savior rose and He says "I am the way, the Truth and the Light," by faith Enoch was translated. Heb. 11, 5. Gen. 5,24. Why translated? Because he walked with God. I am glad to say Daddy Rockett was one of my best friends. Dear reader, you ask "why die?" The wages of sin is death. Rom. 6,23. Walk with God and your gift is eternal life. Daddy Rockett always manifested a Christ-like spirit. Envy, malice, evil speaking and hypocracy found no harbor in his life. "The work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness, quietness, and an assurance forever." Isaiah 32,17. ----- A Friend. #################################################################################
