M. M. Berry J. M. Berry, 65, pioneer traveling salesman of the Southwest and believed to have installed the first telephone ever operated in Dallas, died Thursday afternoon at his home, 3318 North Fitzhugh avenue. His death came after an illness that had kept him confined to his home for the last year. Mr. Berry, long a familiar figure in commercial traveler circles and an institutional force at each traveling men’s day at the State Fair for more than thirty years, was a past grand councilor of the United commercial Travelers. He was also a past secretary and treasurer of Dallas Council U.C.T. Born June 26, 1865, in Union Parish, Louisiana, he came to Dallas more than forty-five years ago. he was among the first professional electricians in the city and installed a telephone in local service when this instrument was a rare novelty. Entering the retail grocery business, he was associated for a time with the late Tom F. Laughlin in the old Live Oak Grocery and then with Mommand Brothers. He became a traveling salesman for the New Orleans Company and then entered the employ of the Waples-Platter Grocer Company, for which he worked for more than a quarter of a century. He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Robin Adair; two grandsons, Robin Adair, Jr. and Cecil Adair, and a great-grandson. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Weiland’s Funeral Church, 2909 Live Oak Street.
