Slaton (19 July 1861 – 6 Feb 1935) had dated Union Parish Clerk of Court James Monroe Smith in the 1870s and maybe early 1880s. He had married in 1885 to May Olive Kidd, who died in 1895. Following her death, James M. Smith resumed his relationship with Miss Slaton. Smith, prominent in political affairs of the state for many years, will be held at 3 P. M. today from the residence of Dr. J. A. Hendrick, 117 Jordan Street, under the direction of the Osborn funeral home. Interment will be in Greenwood cemetery. Mrs. Smith’s husband was several times state senator from Union Parish and later was state treasurer during the administration of Gov. Newton D. Blanchard. She was born July 19, 1861, at Vienna, LA, and was married Jan. 6, 1898. She was graduated from the Woman’s Female College at Staunton, Va., and later graduated in music from Boston conservatory and Cincinnati conservatory. Being a brilliant pianist and composer, she was for many years prominent in music circles. She was also landscape artist. Mrs. Smith had been a resident of Shreveport since 1908. She was a life-long Christian and a devout member of the First Baptist church. Surviving are two step-children, Mrs. J. A. Hendrick and James M. Smith, Jr., of this city; two nieces, Mrs. Carter Luscher, Mobile, Ala., and Mrs. Carrie Bransford, Houston, Texas; one nephew, H. C. Slaton of Mobile. Active pallbearers will be Clare C. Clark, A. B. Kilgore, W. D. Sandifer, J. C. Fontaine, J. L. Mercer, A. Glenn Flournoy, W. M. Phillips and J. Fuller Yearwood. Honorary pallbearers will be deacons and directors of the First Baptist church. ####################################################################################
