Shields) John Elisha Phillips died at his home January 26, 1936 at the age of seventy seven years of age. In the death of the above named man our State has lost an excellent citizen, the Methodist Church a faithful and devout member, his family a loving husband and devoted father. Although he reached a ripe old age of seventy-seven, he was active, energetic and never tiring in effort to accomplish good along all lines of endeavor. In community affairs John Phillips was always on hand to render assistance when needed. At the bedside of sick friends and neighbors he was present to say a kind word or do a helpful turn. In the Methodist Church his pew was filled as should be the pew of an earnest Christian, enlivened with the hope of bright faith which accomplishes its aim, when able to attend. In 1882 his name was written on the roster of the Masonic fraternity in letters all of which grew brighter as the years went by, being colored again and again by the fruitful which halts at no troubles or knows no defeat. His earthly remains were carried by sorrowing brethren to the old Alabama cemetery and laid to rest last Tuesday morning, there to rest in the shadows of the church he had served and loved for half a century. Left behind to await a final call to meet in the beyond, are Mrs. Phillips (nee Miss Alma Harper) Miss Maude and Otho Phillips of Bernice, La., Grady Phillips of Smackover, Arkansas, and Mrs. Gladys Stewart of Ansley, La., one brother T. K. Phillips of Bernice, La This death marks the going of another good man, the breaking of another column, and the creating of one more vacancy in the ranks of tried and true Amercan citizenry. David said at the death of Abner "A prince of Isreal has fallen;" thus we speak of our brother. The Latin phrase "Dum tacet mores clamat" is befitting his passing. --------------------------------------------------------------------- This obituary was given by Ann Phillips Pearson.
