H. Barnes, 59, prominent insurance man of Farmerville, who died at 1:45 o’clock a.m. Tuesday August 13, 1940, following an attack of paralysis early Saturday were held from the Farmerville Baptist Church. Interment followed in the Farmerville cemetery under the direction of the Kilpatrick Funeral Home. Luther Hawthorne Barnes was born in Farmerville, March 30, 1881, a son and eldest child of the late Dr. William W. Barnes and his wife, Sue Lee. He received his early education at the local high school and when he attained his majority he embarked in the life insurance business, being at first connected with the New York Life Insurance Co. for several years, In 1905, he became editor and publisher of The Gazette, and for fifteen years was its able editor. In 1920 he sold the paper to the present owner. Since that time he has been engaged in the insurance business as representative in this territory of the Great Southern Life Insurance Company of Houston, Texas. On June 12, 1904, Mr. Barnes was married to Miss Nellie Griffith who survives him. He is also survived by five sons, L. H. Barnes Jr., of Galveston, Texas; Griffith Barnes of Barcelona, Venezuela, South America; Fred Lee Barnes of Downsville; Harold Gray Barnes of Alton, Illinois and Sully Barnes of Washington D.C.,; one brother, W.W. Barnes of Mer Rouge; three sisters, Mrs. O.L. Tugwell of Farmerville; Mrs. Thomas Sullivan and Mrs. Thomas Hayes of Monroe; two grandchildren, Billy Barnes and William Waldron Barnes also survive. ##########################################################
