A. Matthews, Dies; Rites Slated Albany, Texas, April 25 – Judge John Alexander Matthews, 86, pioneer cattleman of Texas, died here Friday. He had devoted his life to cattle raising, beginning as a lad when he went up the cattle trail to Dodge City, Kan., and Denver. Judge Matthews was born at Union Parish, La. the family coming to Texas in a wagon train and settling in Stephens County. The family moved to a Schackleford County ranch and was identified with settlements near Fort Griffin, fourteen miles north of Albany, where the 45,000-acre Matthews ranch now lies. This is the oldest ranch here now owned and operated by its original settlers. Surviving are two sons, Joe B. Matthews of Albany, rancher-banker, and Watt Reynolds Matthews of Albany, who had been active in the Matthews ranch interests since graduating from Princeton University in 1921, and five daughters, Mrs. May Blanton, Albany; Mrs. Susette Burns, Pauls Valley, Okla.; Mrs. E. Matthews Casey, Albany; Mrs. Lucille M. Brittingham, Albany and San Antonio, and Mrs. Sallie Judd, Houston. Also surviving are the following sisters; Mrs. Susan M. Reynolds of Fort Worth, Mrs. Ella M. Conrad of Snyder, Mrs. Mattie Hoover of fort Worth and Mrs. Mary Brown of Los Angeles.
