Porter Services for Mr. Martin A. Porter, 88, of Bernice, were held at 3 pm Sunday, August 5 at the First Baptist Church of Bernice with the Rev. Lamar Skinner officiating. Interment followed in the city cemetery in Bernice under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Bernice. Mr. Porter died Friday, August 3 at Tri-Ward Hospital in Bernice after a lengthy illness. A native of Shiloh, he was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bernice where he served as Decon and was the retired owner of Bernice Hardware Company. Mr. Porter was a Mason, former member of the Bernice Lions Club, very active in big baseball, a graduate of Bernice High School and attended Northwestern State College. He was also an avid fisherman. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lucille Porter of Bernice; and one sister, Mrs. Jewel Phillips of Homer. Active pallbearers were Deacons of the First Baptist Church, Rufus P. Smith, Kenny Culpepper, Maury Davis, Harry Stall, Billy O'Bannon, Watson Goss, Charles Ward, Billy Grafton, and James D. Odom. Honorary pallbearers were Conley Post, Bob Tubbs, Bobby Couch and Keith Byram. # # #
