ASHBY, SR. * Famerville Gazette 11/12/1998 Services for Ralph E. Ashby, Sr., age 86 of Downsville, were held at 10:30 a.m. last Thursday, November 5, 1998 at Downsville Baptist Church with the Revs. Jerry Whitman, Charles Davis and Louis Bartett officiating. Interment followed in the Downsville Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Famerville. Mr. Ashby died on Tuesday, November 3, 1998, at his home in Downsville. A baseball player for Maryville College in Maryville, Tennessee Mr.Ashby went on following his graduation to play professional baseball and then entered the U.S. Army, serving during World War II and acquiring the rank of major before being relived from active duty. In 1942, he married Lucille Davis and settled in Downsville where he began a career in poulty and livestock farming. Mr. Ashby was a member of Downsville Baptist Church and was very active in the community. Survivors include his wife of 55 years Lucille Davis Ashby of Downsville; two daughters, Elizabeth Hunt and husband Charlie of Winnsboro, Texas and Carol King and husband Bobby of Downsville; one son Ray Ashby and wife Lou Alice of Downsville; three Granddaughters and nine grandsons. Pallbearers were Keith Antley, David Wade, Larry Banks, Johnny McFarland, Corky Crane, and Wilbur Wheeler. Honorary pallbearers were Richard Revels, Lt. Col. O.M. Nolen, Durwood McFarland, Bill Hamilton, Fred Wade, Glen Wade, Gary Patterson, Chris Salsbury and Robert Calhoun. # # #
