This is from the collection of Peggy Rockett. Dr. M. Wick Laurence, Jr. Bernice, LA - Services for Dr. M. Wick Laurence, Jr., age 87, of Bernice, La, will be at 10 AM Monday, September 13, 1999 at First Baptist Church of Bernice with the Rev. David Weeks assisted by Rev. W. C. Smith officiating. Interment will be in Bernice Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Bernice. Dr. Laurence died Saturday, September 11, 1999 at Lincoln General Hospital in Ruston. He was a 1932 graduate of LA Tech and was the captain of the Tech Baseball Team and a 1937 graduate of Atlanta Southern Dental College (Emory University). Dr. Laurence practiced dentistry in his hometown of Bernice, La for 40 years. He served in the U.S. Army Dental Corp. and was discharged with the rank of Major during World War II. Dr. Laurence was a member of the 5th District Dental Society, American Dental Association, Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry, a 50 year member of the Louisiana Dental Association, Psi Omega Fraternity and Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He served on the Bernice Town Council for 24 years, President of Bernice Industrial Development Corporation in the 1950's and the Past President of the LA Quarter Horse Association. Dr. Laurence was also a member of the Louisiana Farm Bureau and Union Parish Farm Bureau, LA Forestry Association, LA Cattleman's Association, LA Hereford Association. He was one of the first members of the Bernice Volunteer Department, co-founder and major supporter of Big 6 and Big 8 Semi Pro Baseball League. He sponsored the Dixie Youth Baseball League in Bernice for a number of years. Dr. Wick supported the Ouachita Valley Boy Scouts of America, the Thunderbird District and Troop 59. He served on the Board of Directors of the bank of Bernice, and Advisory Board of Community Trust Bank for a number of years. Survivors include his wife; Cortez Hicks Laurence; daughter Margeann L. Warden; son-in-law, Henry F. Warden; grandson Robert Wickliffe Warden; and granddaughter Amelia Marie Warden. Pallbearers will be Dr. Warren Grafton, Dr. Hoye Grafton, Lue Charles Napper, Stan Elkins, John Camp, Gary Patterson, Jeff Carroll, and Sid Moreland. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Calvin Reeves, Johnette Davis, Jo Tatum, Ima Jean Bennett, Donald Lindsay, Ezra Fields, Crawford Fields, James Fields, and the members of the 5th District Dental Society. Family will receive friends at his residence from 2:00 PM on Sunday until 9 PM on Sunday, September 12, 1999. # # #
