                         HENRY  J. MOSS
                         Abbeville, LA

Henry J. Moss is a native of Louisiana, born in what is now
Vermilion parish, 1835. He is one of a family of seven children
borrn to Alfred and Joanna (Hartley) Moss. Alfred Moss was born
in Georgia, removing to Louisiana with his parents when a boy,
and here  received his education. He was a soldier in the Mexican
War.  During the whole of his life he gave his attention to
agricultural pursuits. He died in Vermilion parish in 1845, his
widow surviving him until 1853.  The subject of this sketch was
educated in the schools of the locality in which he was reared,
and on beginning business life engaged in farming, to which he
has devoted himself during the whole of his life. He served as
a soldier in the Civil War, having enlisted in the infantry
service. He only served a short while, when he was wounded and
was disabled for active service and received his discharge. Mr.
Moss owns six hundred acres of land in Vermilion parish, three
hundred of which he cultivates, principally in corn, rice and
cane. In 1858 he married Miss Jane Primeaux, of Vermilion parish.
They are the parents of sixteen children, fifteen of whom are
living, viz: Maticia, Anna, Clarence, Franklin, Henrietta, Laura,
Carrie M., Hartley, Oliver, oward, Cornelius, Clifton. Lily,
Lilian and Walter.
