Re: Searching for Creoles of Color: Labauve,Catalon, Hebert,Godfrey Author: Wallace Roderiquez Date: 20 Dec 2002 HI,. MS Clark, First let me say that I hope that you and your family have a great Christmas. I have been searching the Federal Census for Vermilion Parish, without any luck. Can you tell me who the father of Joseph Labauve was? Are you and your family in any way related to Father John Labauve, a priest at St Marys,in Galveston, Texas? That is a stupid question in away, all LABAUVES are somehow related. I would love to exchange emails with you and ask some more questions, if you would permit me to. My email address is :wal37lace@aol.com and also at: wallace.rodriguez@attbi.com. Once again thank you, as I stated before, all information that I can gather puts me one step closer to my ancestors. So any thing else that you might be able to share with me please do. I can't find any information on either one of them. They were my ggrandparents. I'd appreciate any info you could give me. Re: Broussard Cove Author: Forrest w Matthieu Date: 24 Nov 2002 I have found mention of Broussard Cove in the 1935 census. It mentions that it is somewhere close to Maurice. This is in Federal census micro film, 1930, T626-823, #57-12, 57-13 & 57-14. Good hunting Forrest Broussard Cove Author: Nancy Lees Date: 23 Nov 2002 While searching the 1880 census I came across a location given as Broussard Cove in Vermilion Parish. I cannot find it on a map. Where was or where is Broussard Cove located? It will appear on WorldConnect in a day or two since I uploaded it this morning. Fr. Donald HEBERT's SW Louisiana Records CD info from a "catfinley@catholic.org" helped me straighten it out! Warm regards, Barbara (V. I am researching my family and plan to return soon. Hope this is of some help to you. Catherine Re: Seeking Andrew Jackson PORTERs Vermilion Parish, LA 19thC. Author: Barbara V. Smith Date: 13 Nov 2002 Surnames: PORTER CAMPBELL CARROLL JETER PALMER SANDERS WOOD TAYLOR Dear Linda, et al., I'm pretty sure you're looking for an Andrew Jackson PORTER in some branch of my PORTER family since one of the children was named "Shedrick" [sic]! My 3rd great-grandfather was Shadrach PORTER b. 10 August 1780 in Union County, SC d. 17 July 1827 in St. Martin Parish, LA. I have 5 Andrew Jackson PORTERs in my database, but with very little information on any of them - a Jr. and Sr. in my own line, a Jr. and Sr. in Shadrach's Uncle Jedithan's line and another one I'm not quite sure from where.... I'm afraid modern researchers get them (and a few more...) very mixed up since Shadrach's uncles, brothers, and children often named their children the same names, all the way from South Carolina, through Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and on to Texas. I, also, am VERY interested in anyone who is SURE they have correct information on any part of this family, but I have become VERY confused through the last 5 to 7 years with supposedly "authoritative" information that turns out to be info mixed with two, three, four, or five of these people by the same name. What we really ALL need to do is get one of our relatives in each of the states this family has passed through, or settled in, to go directly to the record sources, copy the information exactly, and put it on the Web so everyone can "get his or her ducks lined up in CORRECT rows", so to speak. There are MANY researchers on this family, and quite a few are still arguing about this or that detail! If you, or anyone else, wants any of my info (which of course has often come from many kind sources whom I list in my records...), almost all of it can be found on Rootsweb's WorldConnect database site at: http://wc.rootsweb.com/~bcvs It is downloadable to your own computer in up to 10-generations-at-a-time chunks. PLEASE, though, SHARE with me any corrections or additions, if you would be so kind so we don't keep spreading incorrect stuff around! I am partially-disabled from an old car accident, so I often can't reply to your notes unless you copy them daily for a week or so ;-) and keep resending them until I get the energy to remember to try to answer them. It certainly isn't because I'm not VERY interested in what you have to say; it's just very difficult for me to type a worthwhile reply and/or go through my heavy original records in order to check information... A chronically-dislocating shoulder and resultant chronic-pain syndrome make it very problematic for doing genealogy. Still, I am a former public-high-school history teacher, so I DO TRY to be as accurate as possible with notes and sources, etc., despite the fact that being stuck in Ohio most of the time makes me very dependent on other kind relatives to do the travelling to SC, Mississippi, and Louisiana, or even my own wonderful hometown of Cincinnati's library and LDS FHC. My direct line is as follows: Edward PORTER b. England>Thomas PORTER>John PORTER b. 1695 Lancaster Co., VA>Edward Sanders PORTER b. 1720 Lancaster Co., VA d. 1792 Union Co., SC>Landlot (Lancelot) PORTER b. ca. 1744 Lancaster Co., VA d. 1831 Hinds Co., Mississippi>Shadrach PORTER b. 1780 Union Co., SC d. 1827 St. Martin Parish, LA>James Monroe PORTER b. 1819 St. Landry Parish, LA d. 1870 St. Landry Parish, LA>Jamie "Jimmie" Evelina PORTER b. 1864 Coldspring, San Jacinto Co., TX d. 1936 New Orleans, LA (this last woman was my maternal great-grandmother)>Ashton Michael CARROLL b. 1883 Bay St. Louis, Mississippi/registered in New Orleans birth records>Patricia Bruce CARROLL VOLZ b. 1929 Cincinnati, OH>me b. 1951 Cincinnati! Linda, a last favor - tell me about your "BRUCE" surname; as you can see, it's my mother's middle name, and comes from somewhere back in her family's history, but we haven't located the connection yet... Do you have any idea of first names so I could possibly help you? Looking for Wilfred Barras Author: Cherryl Montgomery Date: 20 Oct 2002 Surnames: MERCIER, WILTZ, ESCLAVON, DeCLOUET, MASSE, GREGOIRE, JEAN LOUIS, SHAY (CHAIX), GUIDRY, BASILE (CHIASSON), BARRAS, LeMELLE, LeBLANC, GUILLUAME, HENRY, and SIMON I'm looking for a man by the name of Wilfred Barras (Barra). He was born an only child around 1916 somewhere in Southwest Louisiana, possibly St. Martin, Lafayette, Vermillion or Iberville Parish. He was probably raised most of the time in Lafayette. He is the son of Eugene Clebert Barras and Elodie "Elea" Catalon. When Clebert married Elodie Catalon 5 April 1893 in Maurice, Louisiana (Lafayette Parish), he claimed that his father was Julien Barras. The 1920 U.S. census found Wilfred at the age of 4 years old, living in Plaquemine, Iberville Parish, Louisiana with his father, mother (or stepmother). The family was living next door to Clebert's half brother Terrance Mercier and his future wife Eunice Verrett's family. The family story has it that Clebert's wife died sometime while Wilfred was very young at which time Clebert pursued and possibly married Elodie's sister or relative, Lena Catalan. Clebert died 25 Oct 1939 in a hospital in Lafayette. His death certificate stated that he was a resident of Ridge, Louisiana in Vermillion Parish. Shortly after the death of his father, family stories say that Wilfred joined the military, quite possibly the Air Force because he wanted to travel and see the world. He was not seen or heard from since the death of his father with the exception of coming home once or twice for the funeral of a favorite relative. He was supposedly close to a pair of cousins, Lazaird LaSalle and Oliver Daigre LaSalle, both are deceased, the sons of his father's half sister Marie Louise Fontenette. They were all residents of St. Martinville, LA. Descendants of Wilfred Barras have not been located thus far. The family story is that Wilfred married a blond from Grand Marais or Patouville, La., a small town not far from Jeanerette, in Iberia Parish, LA. Supposedly, they had two children. When Wilfred joined the military, the couple divorced and his wife and children returned to Grand Marais to her family. Wilfred would be about 83yrs old by now. He has not been found in the SSDI and the military won't give me any information on him so he must be still living. The only lead that I have is that Wilfred's wife's sister was married to an Hebert. The sister had 2 children. Clorita & August. Clorita married Ray Joseph. I am searching for him for family research and for my Mother, Elvena Mercier Forbes, who's getting on in age, in her mid 70's now. She has always wondered what happened to her cousin Wilfred. I would like to find him for her, so she can have at least one last talk with him. She has fond memories of him being close to her father Joseph Edgar Mercier. According to her, he understood French but did not speak it. Holler back at me at Yahoo.......Thanks, Claudette AA Van Lieu/VanLoo Author: Lydia Carrignton Date: 27 Sep 2002 I am looking for information on the VanLieu/VanLoo plantation in Louisiana. It may be that under another name now, if it still exist today. It could possibly be be associated with the (LaBranch) plantation. My great Grandfather Eleck was born on the VanLoo plantation back in the 1800's and so was his half brother Jacob La(Branch). They were born to Renee Branch. I would like to find out in what county/parish this plantation was/is located in. If there are ANY VanLieu/VanLoo's out there that know any information concerning this plantation. Well...what did u want to know? My relatives......My dad's relatives........Well My grandmother, barbara porche has a living brother in Lafayette. We call him "snook"... He must be over 100 by now, lol. I read someone mention my aunt, Crystabelle Juge, she is in Baton Rouge.....not CA. She is moving slowly, but alive and well. My day had 2 brothers, who are both deceased, Edward Juge and John Juge. He had 5 sisters, 2 living......Those deceased are Doris Juge Vavasseur, Theresa Juge Darensbourg, Velma Juge Darensbourg. And those alive are Mildred Juge Decuir, in California and Chrystabelle Juge Chenier here in Baton Rouge. It was great hearing from you. the Juge family is a special one......a vibrant, and unending legacy....Strong and lots of love to give........I miss my Dad and my aunts so. Recently I lost my sister to a brain tumor, last year....a year after my dear dad. My dad's grandmother, Alice Juge. Have u heard of her. Well it was a sad story....she was murdered back in the 50s by her son-in-law.....he axed her. My grandmother, Barbara Porche came from a pretty wealthy family.........Zenon Porche. He was a planter back in the days and owned property. No, I dont have a clue why only your grandfather and my grandfather, PaPa, as we called him were the ones to stay in Louisiana. Maybe we will be able to find out. I do want you to know that I am "black". Don't really look black, but I am. My mother was also creole, from here. She was a LeDuff........and a beautiful one. Life is amazing. The Juge family is very interesting. My grandmother, Barbara Porche, was a special lady. I believe she had special powers. She always told me my Dad was powerful also. He was in WWII in the navy. He was such a strong man. And handsome 2. He inspired me greatly. And if you are a relative of mine, I know u r great too! My Dad told me of our family originating in France. And I too have researched the family name. It was LeJuge in France. I am just happy to have u guys seek this very interesting journey and who knows, we may even meet one day. Don't share too much with your mom, she may want to keep some things from you........but you and I can always chat. Good Luck Cuz, Claudette........... Re: Ambroise Lepine Mathieu Author: Georgia Gauthier Date: 21 Sep 2002 I believe that Mayance Mathieu is my gg grandfather. brother of Ambroise Mathieu. My search is for information on Euphelia Mathieu, maybe spelled Ophelia, and possibily by the name of Marie, born in 1860. I was told by family members a long time ago that she was of Indian descent and an orphan (although orphans may have been considered to be orphans by losing only one parent) If you have information on Euphelia, please let me know. Hi Forrest, I have some information on Eva Trahan, seems that she is buried next to Mayance Mathews (Mathieu) and Clemence B Mathews. Hope this helps. I have the web address to the Abshire Cemetery-Cemetery order if you would need, otherwise here is a copy and paste portion. It's possible that we are related. Thanks, Georgia Oh one other thing I read somewhere that the Lepine name was dropped and the middle name of their father Mathieu was taken. not sure why. The recent postings here are all new to what I knew about the Juge branch, which I mostly got from Jeri West a few years back. I am involved as follows: Martin Juge b 1807 (great great grandfather) Francis Joseph Juge b 1848 (great grandfather) Charles Raphael Juge b 12/6/1881 (my grandfather) Marie Iris Juge b 8/7/1910 (my mother) Rene Thomas Folse b 10/12/1945 (me) I have a great deal of detail on the family of Charles Raphael Juge if anyone would like to know. Does anyone have knowledge of Martin's ancestors? I would really like to see some of the data of the descendants of Martin Juge so I can compare this to what Jeri West (who is mostly working on Decuir and Porche) gave me and add in or correct what I know. It appears that there is room for doubt as to whether Iron Eyes Cody is Indian. Re: IRON EYES CODY Author: Christopher Dunn Date: 4 Sep 2002 I'm not sure as to the validity of Iron Eyes being descended from the De Conit/Salpietra line. I am the president this year, if you want additional info feel free to contact me direct at djkirkland@hotmail.com Re: Juge Family Research Author: Pat Schexnayder Date: 2 Sep 2002 Surnames: Juge, Porche Claudette-- You are the first relative of Charles Hilaire Juge I have heard from. Thanks for replying to the message. If you are the granddaughter of Charles Hilaire then you and I are third cousins. My mother, Ollie, is the daughter of Joseph Isnaga Juge, Charles' brother. So I am Isnaga's granddaughter. (Joseph Isnaga always went by the name Isnaga.) Isnaga and Charles' parents were Joseph Antoine Juge and Marie Alice Porche. Charles and Isnaga were two of their 8 children and the only two who did not move to California in the late 40s and early 50s. I have located all the families of the other siblings in California and attended a Juge family reunion there two years ago where I received some information about your family. I understand a Cristobel Juge, who would be your father's sister, lives in CA. Where are the rest of your family? I have been researching my family history for about 10 years or so and like you, find the Juge's quite an interesting group. I must tell you that I was unaware that all these years there was a branch of our family right there in Baton Rouge. I have a list of Charles Hilaire Juge and Barbara Porche's children from a succession filed in the 19th JDC. And, of course, It lists Joseph Anthony as one of their 8 children. Do you do genealogy? Have you a lot of information. I would love to share info with you. Please email me. By the way, I live in Slidell. Valery LeMaire, abt Nov 1835 The LeMaire family is well documented back to Germany and I have all of the research but am trying to piece together the later cousins of my grandmother Irene LeMaire. From what I understand, Andre was a name often given to LeMaire sons and then they were distinquished from others by the use of their second name. It can be confusing. I'd love to have more on the above children and their descendants. Irene LeMaire married my grt grt grandfather John Vachel Stephens. Their daughter Josephine Stephens was my grt grandmother who married Alfred Hebert. Irene died in childbirth and John married her cousin Josephine Trahan and had two daughters with her. My line is: 1. Andre LeMaire dit Edelmeyer m. Rasalie Baudoin 2. Andre LeMaire Jr. m. Marguerite LeBlanc 3. Irene LeMaire, m. John Vachel Stephens 4. Josephine Stephens, m. Alfred Hebert 5. Date: 12 Jun 2002 Edwina: My wife's mother is Irene Hardy Sloan. Irene's parents were Grover Hardy & Fanny Briggs. I believe Grover & Ulyses were brothers. I have found that a great source for documenting the history of the Vermillion Parrish ancestors is the U.S. CENSUS records. In particular, those available between 1870 and 1930 have many of the ancestors listed. These records can generally be obtained via most local public libraries and especially college and university libraries. Also check to see if there is a Federal Archives and Records Center (part of U.S. General Services Administration) near you or one of the Later Day Saints (Mormom Church) facilities near you. I do not know where these families lived before they located in Vermillion Parrish. I've heard various stories over the years I can share with you later. At the court house in Abbeyville there are also a few records that may be helpful regarding land ownership, probate, law suits, etc; but there are not many due to past flooding, etc. We have been to Briggs Memorial and the 2 graveyards on several occassions. Re: Ambroise Lepine Mathieu Author: Jeannette Duplantis Date: 9 Apr 2002 Thank you, I'm so excited I don't know where to start. But I do want to know our connection. This is what I do know, I think. Ambroise married Marie Trahan, had at least 6 children: Elima, Az'ma, Edward,( Az'na, & Marguerite, who kept the Lepine name), and Meance, my grandfather. OOh and there the list gets long. Between my grandfather and grandmother there were at least 21 children, my dad, Ellis or tonfon, as he was called, being the baby. I do have a very serious question. I recently found out that my dad had a sister born around 1903 and that her name was possibly Glovis. My older brother heard a little about her; that she ran away? at an early age and was never heard from again. Do you have any information, there?
