James Taylor Smith born abt 1827 LA Author: Dana Hudson Date: 18 Dec 2003 6:24 AM Who was James Taylor Smith? He was born in the Vermilion Parish area (Likely in the Perry to Prairie Greg area) in about August 1827. He had a 1/2 brother named Robert S. "Short" Johnson, born abt 1830. His mother may have been Sara Ann Wallace Moore Smith Johnson, born about 1797. Her parents were Whittington Wallace and Lucy White. Sarah had a 1/2 sister named Joanna Hartley. Joanna was married into the Moss and Pullin families. James Taylor Smith married first, Emily Hargrave and they had three daughters. By 1860 Emily died. He then married Julia Ann Stephens Dudoit, daughter of William and Rachel Clark Stephens. James and Julia had several children. They named one of them James Gradney Smith. I wonder if Gradney could be a clue to James Taylor Smith's genealogy? In our research we keep going in circles of the same last names such as Smith, White, Wallace, Stephens, Clark, ect. What are we missing? These people were in Louisiana before and around 1800. Anyone have any ideas? They are found in Vermillion Co., LA in the 1900 census in the Spring Hill District on Page #158 and are family #116/117. I believe this Stella that was born about Oct. 1876 in Iowa is may be the same as Estella Crane born abt. 1875 in the United States (1881 Canadian Census) to Zebulon and Sarah Jane Crane. The information would be consistant with what I currently know about her parents. If anyone who did the transcribing of the 1900 census for Vermillion Co. remembers the source for Stella Choate, I would welcome any information. I do not live near Louisiana, so any help is valued. I am related through George Crane, her brother and trying to piece what happened the Crane family once their parents moved to Lousiana. Albert was from England, arriving sometime around 1900 to 1920. What port he arrived at is unknown. Madeline was from France, arriving the same time period. Thier son Bailey Lee was born in 1921 and lived his adult life in Fl. Madeline's maiden name is a problem, I have only heard it and never seen it written down. Muscopate is how it sounds. That doesn't look very French to me! But then again what do I know..lol. I tried looking in sites that list French surnames and came up empty. I am hoping someone here will know this family or at the very least how to spell Muscopate correctly! I did find a SS index listing for Albert and Madeline Lee. I assume they were married because of the ages and the places they lived. Albert born 1893, died 1982. Madeline born 1894 died 1975 They both have listed as localities: Abbeville, Cow Island, Forked Island, and Meaux. These are all located in Vermilion Louisiana. She said that she remembers Mr. Roger Dale very well. She also told me that her father who was Adonile Nunez who later moved to Little Chenier La., which is near Creole is very closely related to your grandfather. The first Nunez whom was Joseph whom was married to Marie Rose Richard came from Perry, La., which is next door to Abbeville, La. Joseph's grandson Joseph Aladin moved to Grand Chenier, in which is where I am from. He later moved to Texas and remarried after his first wife died. I think that is where John Asa was born. Catherine Re: BERWICK + MERRIMAN Author: Judy Trevino Date: 8 Feb 2003 8:18 PM Surnames: McMullen, Paxton, Reid, Manhein, Ogden, Garnier, Monnier, Rowe, Hammond Hi Terry, My gr-gr-grandmother was Elizabeth Reid (orphan in care of Mr. & Mrs. August Monnier) who was married to James McMullen (son of James Mcmullen & Anne Stephens) about 1862 in Vermilionville, Lafayette, Louisiana. They had two children a son named John (born 1864 but died during childhood?) and Irene Euphemie (also called Mamie)born 1863. I'm guessing that James died around 1864-66 (possibly Civil War?) since Elizabeth married Benjamin Porter Paxton in 1867 and had son Robert Benjamin (also in 1867).In 1870 she had my gr-grandmother Evelena "Lena" Marie Munhein (Manhein) whose father was a peddler/merchant by the name of J.Monhein or Manhein (no marriage record found at present). Soon after Lena was born her parents were separated and Elizabeth went to work on the LaStrape's Plantation between Breaux Bridge and Cecelia, Louisiana. She was able to keep Lena with her but McMullen family members took Mamie to live with them (Mamie eventually settled in Houston, TX with cousins Matthew & Adele Rowe and their daughter Eva Hammond) and Robert Paxton went back and forth between godparents Anatole & Marie Garnier and his mother. He was also spent a year with the farmer Pierre Trahan and his family for a year (until the death of Mr. Trahan). About 1874-78 Elizabeth was married to a man named Youch Ogden or Urich Ogden (no marriage record found). She died of Yellow Fever some time before 1880. Lena was cared for by a family near Lafayette for a short while before being placed in the Mt. Carmel Catholic Orphanage in New Orleans where she remained until 1888 when her brother Robert obtained custody of her and they relocated to Beaumont, Texas where she met and married a young Irishman named Thomas Sullivan O'Dowd (who interestingly was born in New Orleans). I would like to obtain more info on the deaths of Elizabeth's spouse, James McMullen, and their son John. In addition I have often wondered if any of the McMullen descendents would have information on those sketchy years 1870-1880. Have you ever heard anything about this side of your family tree? Jean-Pierre was a storekeeper in New Orleans; he died 4/1/1865 in that city. They had 2 daughters; Felicie and Marie DESPAUX. Margie Angie B(ailey) Haner, later Huff, b. 1852 or so Author: Orin Hargraves Date: 1 Jan 2003 5:59 PM Surnames: Haner, Huff, Hargraves Can anyone help me track this elusive g-grandmother? I cannot find her forbears. She married Edward Huff 23 October 1872. I'm not having any luck determining any other significant events in her life. She probably lived in Vermilion Parish for most of it. She's indexed in the 1870 LA census, unusual given that she was surely not a head of household at that age, but I haven't looked at the actual census data yet; that's on my list of things to do. She doesn't seem to belong to any other Haners I could locate in Louisiana. Any leads much appreciated! Orin Hargraves
