This was a piece of grass-carpeted, rolling hills, shaded with moss-draped Eve oak trees, under which grazing animals kept the lawn clipped. One of the large landowners of the area was Lucien Sarazin Broussard, whose plantation spanned the Lafayette-Vermilion parish line on the Vermilion River.
