On a mission in the early part of January 1944 with the 429th Squadron, 2nd Bomb Group, Scalisi's B-17 aircraft was shot down over enemy territory in Foggia, Italy. In spite of being wounded by shrapnel, he evaded immediate capture by the German's and spent months hiding in the mountains of northern Italy. There they accomplished the seemingly impossible task of scaling the Vatican Wall to seek asylum inside Vatican City until the Allied Forces would invade Rome in June of 1944. After devoting 26 years to the USAF, CMS Scalisi retired, returned to Abbeville and opened B. Scalisi Men's Wear which he and his wife Mary Ann operated for the next ten years. After retiring from the men's clothing business, he became an avid gardener. He was quite accomplished in growing fruit trees and vegetables. Mr. Scalisi shared his love of gardening, especially his lemon trees, with all who visited his home, and many other interested individuals from as far away as Mississippi and Florida. Mr. Scalisi was a loving and devoted husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather and friend. He never met a stranger and displayed a wonderful sense of humor, even in his final days.
