(Abbeville, La.) 1856-1906, March 19, 1904, Image 3 John Abshire, Jr., Dead. - Death has suddenly removed from this sphere of activity and usefulness one of our best known citizens. John Abshire, Jr, died Monday night at his residence, at LeRoy in the 5th ward ten miles north of Abbeville, after an illness of about one month. He was born in Vermilion parish Aug. 17, 1843. When but 17 years old he enlisted in Fournet's famous "Yellow Jacket" Batallion, and was afterwards transferred to the Eighteenth Louisiana Infantry, where he served gallantly until the close of the war. He was a successful merchant and farmer, and had by his industry and frugality, accumulated much property. He was a prominent Democrat, a good business man, and enjoyed the esteem of the community. He leaves a widow and three children, Dr. J. T. Abshire, of LeRoy, Mrs. W. W. Minor and J. Allison Abshire. The funeral which took place at the Catholic church was one of the largest in many years. A large delegation of the local lodge of Catholic Knights of America, of which he was a prominent member, attended the funeral in a body.
