The attorney, musician, thespian, linguist, historian, raconteur and preservationist died of cancer at his home in Abbeville early Friday. He was 59. He will be buried at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Abbeville at 6:30 p.m. Monday. Visitation at the Vincent Funeral Home will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. until time of services on Monday. “It’s always hard to lose someone who has been so active in so many things, and at such a young age in life,” said Abbeville Mayor Mark Piazza. “He was a local, born and reared Abbevillian, and we will miss him.” “He was such an unassuming man that you never knew about him until you started asking questions,” said Candice Hattan, a fellow attorney and family friend. “It was so typical, for example, that when he bought a 17th century organ, he wanted to play 17th century music on it, so he began buying 17th century sheet music,” she said. She also remembered him as “a kind and gentle man, and with such a wit. The part that many people did not see about him was the kindness and warmth of the man.” In 1971, Fontenot was elected to the Louisiana Senate as its youngest member, taking the seat held by legendary Vermilion Parish politician Dudley J. LeBlanc. He was one of the five original incorporators of The Abbey Players, Abbeville’s theater troupe, and was a member of its board of directors at the time of his death. Fontenot was also remembered as a lover of history and restorer and perservationist of old buildings, including the Wells Fargo Building in Abbeville. In 1989, he purchased the deteriorating Eagle Hotel in the St. Landry community of Washington and had been restoring it to pre-Civil War condition during the last 14 years. He was also a member of the Washington Museum and Tourist Commission. Fontenot was an avid traveler who spoke fluent French and English and who also studied Latin, German and Russian. He was for eight years the host of the Louisiana Public Broadcasting television show “En Française.” Fontenot was educated in the public schools of Kaplan and Abbeville. He received a bachelor’s degree from UL Lafayette. As an undergraduate music student, he was director of the St. John Cathedral Boy Choir, which specialized in singing 16th-century music. He also served as organist at the cathedral. He worked his way through LSU Law School as organist and choir director of Sacred Heart Church in Baton Rouge. He was the son of Tenes Fontenot and Maudry Marie Marceaux. He is survived by his sister, Sue Fontenot; brother, Michael T. Fontenot; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a younger brother, Bradley F. Fontenot.
