Awful Tragedy February 26 Near Abbeville. Abbeville was terribly shocked last Saturday morning by the news that Alpolinaire Hebert, a well-to-do farmer, had crushed his wife's head with a plow coulter while she slept Friday night and committed suicide by himself. It is believed that the dreadful deed was committed while Hebert was temporily (sic) insane. The double tragedy occurred at the home of the couple some four miles south-west of town. The body of Mrs. Hebert was discovered by her niece, a young woman of some 17 years of age, about 5:30 o'clock Saturday morning. She summoned neighbors and a search of the premises was instituted with the result that the body of Hebert was found in a slaughter pen some distance from the house. Hebert, after killing his wife, went to the pen and secured a rope which he attached to the gallows from which stock was swung when slaughtered. He adjusted a noose about his neck and dropped into space. In his dying struggles Hebert broke the rope and his body was found on the floor. The couple had three children, the oldest being about 12 years old. No explanation other than temporary insanity can be found for the rash act, as it had been generally supposed that there was no cloud to mar the domestic happiness of the couple. The children made orphans in this tragic manner are being cared for by relatives. The funeral of Mrs. Hebert, which was largely attended, was held from the Catholic church here, interment being in the Catholic cemetery. The remains of Mr. Hebert were buried in the family cemetery on the home place.
