James Groves Jr. was born 25 Apr 1819 LA, son of James Groves Sr. & Mary Nash, and he died 25 Dec 1885 (Vernon) LA. He married Nancy Perkins, and nine children were born. Nancy was born 7 Oct 1820 LA and died 6 Aug 1902 (Vernon) LA. They are buried in Glass Window Cemetery, Slagle (Vernon) LA. James Groves served in the Confederate Army as a Private in Co. K, 6th LA Cavalry. After the war, he operated a stage station in Vernon Parish, and owned one of the largest properties in the parish (inherited from his father). He was a member of the Vernon Parish School Board for many years, on the Police Jury, and was a Justice of the Peace. He was a Charter member of the Walnut Hill Baptist Church when it was organized in 1867, served as its first Clerk and held that position until June 1876. On 19 Jun 1880, he was elected treasurer of the church. He also served as Deacon in the church, delegate to the Associational meetings.
