Cooper Cemetery, Vernon Parish Louisiana Submitted by Jane P. McManus ******* ********************************************** Copyright. All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** COOPER CEMETERY - Vernon Parish On US Hwy. 171 South from Leesville; after crossing Zourie Creek in Pickering, turn right at Cooper Baptist Church sign. Continue 1.5 miles, and after passing Cooper Baptist Church on left, turn right (North) onto the next road. Cooper Cemetery is located a short distance down this road. Although the cemetery is not directly affiliated with the Cooper Baptist Church, they do accept donations for its maintenance that they forward to the cemetery committee members. This cemetery is very large and probably covers several acres. A chain link fence surrounds the entire outer perimeter that includes four separate sections. Inscriptions from an older section, that is not maintained but shares the common East & North fence of the Cooper/Brown plot, are listed first. Inscriptions from the separate Cooper/Brown plot just inside the main gate and a small plot of ground to the East immediately inside the main gate are listed second and third. Inscriptions from the main cemetery are listed last. Every effort was made to assist the researcher with family relationships. Therefore, burials in the main cemetery (the larger portion to the West) were read in plots and family groups, rather than rows. The main area was divided into sections; and a map is included at the end of this listing to aid in grave location. As is prevalent in this part of the country where rain & humidity are such a factor, some of the older stones, especially the small concrete bricks, have eroded and were either unreadable or very difficult to read at best. Even with the use of chalk to bring out old letters & numbers, some inscriptions were not evident. It is fortunate that all inscriptions in Vernon Parish were originally copied from 1973 to 1979, and information from those records were used to verify some of the older, unreadable stones. Tombstone inscriptions were copied by Jane P. McManus & Mary P. Partain, 27 September 1994, and updated April 2, 1996. History Cooper Missionary Baptist Church was organized 30 October 1898 in Vernon Parish with Rev. L.E. Howard from Colmesmeil Church in Texas, and the Rev. W.H. Cain from Anacoco Baptist Church as moderator. Calvin Green Carver, a deacon from Pine Hill Baptist Church was Clerk Protem. Charter members were Elder L.E. Howard, Deacon John Gill, D.A. Brown, G.T. Stephens, Emma Jordan, R. K. Stephens, and Emily Brown. The original property for Cooper Cemetery was given to the church by John Jordan to be used as a burial ground. Since that beginning, the cemetery has grown through other donations, and is now under the auspices of the Cooper Cemetery Association. We do not know exactly when the first burials were made in this cemetery, as there are so many unmarked burials in the older, center section. The earliest marked burials in the cemetery were for two members of the Stephens family in 1881. William Stephens and Rebecca Broxton lived in Coffee County (now Geneva), Alabama in the 1850's where they operated a ferry across the Pea River into Walton County, Florida. The road and bridge crossing still bears the name "Stephens' Ferry Road and Stephens' Ferry Crossing." Sometime in the last half of the 1850's, William Stephens and Rebecca Broxton joined a wagon train from Florida and Georgia and moved to Louisiana. They settled in this remote area of Rapides Parish (now Vernon), where they raised a large family. Rebecca (Broxton) Stephens is buried in an unmarked grave in the center section of the cemetery. Many of her descendants are buried here. § The Cooper family, from which this small community took its name, was another of the older families to settle in this area of Vernon Parish. James Cooper & Elizabeth Rollins lived in Dale County Alabama where all 12 of their children were born. Sometime in the mid 1850's, they moved to Rapides Parish (now Vernon), and remained here until their death. It is possible that James and Elizabeth Cooper joined the same wagon train from Florida and Georgia just as the Stephens family had done, as they both settled in this remote area of Louisiana about the same time. Three of the Cooper children married into the Nichols family (brothers and sister): Mary Cooper married Joseph Nichols; Joseph Cooper married Nancy Nichols; and Elizabeth Cooper married Brittain Nichols Jr. James and Elizabeth Cooper were buried in the older center section of the cemetery. For many years, their graves were marked by the small concrete markers that have eroded in the moist Louisiana climate. New granite markers now reside at the head of their burial place. Cooper Cemetery contains hundreds of the Cooper descendants who are buried here. Section A - (North of COOPER/BROWN Plot) Although adjoining the main cemetery fence, this plot is not maintained, as are the other sections. The small fenced area is overgrown with weeds and grass, and large pine trees have dumped needles. One large tree has fallen across the fenced area. The decayed brush and pine needles form a soft cushion when walked upon, and could cover unmarked burials. Entrance is from a gate at the East side that must be approached from the road. There are only a few gravestones visible in this section. Breazeale, Elmer Linus - 13 Jun 1917/13 Jun 1917 Breazeale, Arthur - 15 Jul 1890/21 May 1928 Breazeale, Mary Della - 23 Sep 1887/24 Oct 1963 Breazeale, Priscilla D. - 1940/1943 Breazeale, Robert A. - 1942/1943 [Double Stone] Section B - (ED COOPER/W.C. BROWN on gate) This plot, just inside the main cemetery front gate, is fenced separately; however, the far North fence adjoins the old section listed earlier. Inscriptions were recorded as approached from the far East to West. Brown, Infant son of M&M W. C.
