Drakes Fork Cemetery, Cravens (Vernon) Louisiana Submitted by Jane Parker McManus Date: May 4, 2010 ************************************************** Copyright. Perhaps its name was derived from Drakes Fork Creek, or from the Drake family who settled near here in the early 1800’s. The Leesville Leader, 14 Mar 1929, had this to say about life in Drakes Fork: News From Drakes Fork: Not much business going on here but everybody is well and all in good humor with one another. Corn is being planted on every farm, and we notice that nearly every man has his land in good condition. An aeroplane [sic] passed over here Sunday. L. P. Brister bought a horse Friday night, paying $35. He saddled it Saturday morning and tried it out to see if it would tote double. It wouldn’t and they walked. Drakes Fork is not so lively as some places but it’s mighty safe. Lord knows that’s something to be proud of.” [Source: Wise, Erbon, “Tall Pines II, A History of Vernon Parish LA and its People,” 1988, Expanded Edition.] DIRECTIONS: On LA Hwy. 10 in Cravens, go west past LA Hwy. 399 south junction about 2.0 miles, and turn left. Continue 1.5 miles to cemetery located on the right. Drakes Fork Cemetery is fenced with a driveway that divides the property in half. The smaller, new section is on the right, and the older section is in the left rear. There are many unmarked graves in this cemetery, but they are all neatly mounded and covered with blackened sea shells. The oldest marked burials in this cemetery were for Mathew Hiram Matthis & Mathew Albritton Matthis in 1864 & 1865 respectively. There were many marked burials in the late 1800’s, but there is no indication when the mounded burials were made, but possibly very old. Tombstone inscriptions were read from the right front in ROW s and from the left rear center driveway to the far left fence in ROW s by Jane McManus and Mary Partain in Oct 1991. An updated separate alphabetical recording (with some genealogical notes) was submitted by Evelyn Cole to this website in 1998. It is hoped that this listing in the order persons were buried might lead to further genealogical clues.
