Holly Grove - Vernon Parish Submitted by Jane P. McManus ********************************************** Copyright. All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From Leesville, take US Hwy. 171 North for approximately 6.0 miles, and turn West (left) onto Holly Grove Rd. There is a large sign at this corner for Holly Grove Church. Cross the railroad tracks, and follow the road for approximately 2.0 miles. The new brick church is located on the right side of the road (North) while the cemetery and old white-frame church is directly across the road on the South. A sign at the front of the new church reads: "Holly Grove Methodist Church First church services 1826 served by circuit riders Founded in 1835 as a Methodist Protestant Church Never without a pastor or Church Superintendent Still on the original location Holly Grove United Methodist Church" The cemetery is maintained and completely enclosed by a hurricane fence. It is difficult to determine the first burial in this cemetery as there are many small old-style concrete markers that are unreadable and without dates. The oldest marked burial appears to be for Dr. John Conerly who died in 1853 or Nancy Guess who died in 185? (dates on her stone are unreadable). In a history of the Mitchell Church done in the late 1890's, Thomas Franklin mentioned an incident concerning John W. Franklin that applies to this cemetery. It seems That John found a very large, unique petrified palm stump in the woods, and he decided it would make a splendid headstone for his grave. He hauled the stump to Mitchell Cemetery and placed it where he planned to be buried. When he later changed his mind about the burial location he desired, he moved the stump to Holly Grove where it currently lies at the foot of Mr. Franklin's grave. HISTORY OF HOLLY GROVE CHURCH "In the early 1830's three or four families came to this part of the State, remained for a short while, then returned to Mississippi. By 1834 and 1835, other emigrants came: the Franklins from Tennessee; and the Martins, Mires, Balls, and James families from Mississippi. Missionaries from Mississippi conducted the first religious services at private residences. There was but one person among those emigrants that would offer a public prayer, Nancy Franklin, a Godly old lady. Through the influence and faithful work of Missionaries, the emigrants mentioned above came together, selected a piece of land, and with their limited means erected a small log house for religious worship and for the schooling of their children. This place was about 150 yards North of the present Holly Grove Church. In 1835, Rev. James Ford, a Protestant Methodist Minister from Mississippi Conference came to the community, preached to the people, and organized a Methodist Society in this little log house with the following members: Jonathan Franklin, James W. Franklin, Elizabeth Franklin, Peter Sandell & wife, John Ball & wife, and a Mister Lamb. After the organization of the society, it was given the name Holly Grove. In 1837, Rev. Luke Conerly and J. W. Franklin, having the interest of the church and community at heart, rode to Natchitoches (a distance of 65 miles) and bought 40 acres of land from the Government and had it patented to Holly Grove Church. Since that time, Holly Grove has never been without a preacher. By 1841, the pastorate was taken over by the Methodist Episcopal Church that had established the Anacoco Circuit. Each month the Rev. Joe Sanders, a circuit preacher at that time, traveled from Bienville Parish to this settlement, crossing Bayou Toro at the mouth, going to Negreet, then to Many, Bayou Scie [sic], Pleasant Hill, and back to Bienville. According to one of the early preacher, Holly Grove Church was never without a pastor since its first, a circuit rider that came with a Bible and a gun tied on his saddle. In 1854, this old log house was removed and a new hewn log house (24 feet by 30 feet) was built near the site of the present building. This second structure was also used as a school. A third boxed building, 34 feet by 40 feet, was built about the year 1872. In 1894 a 2-story frame building was erected, the upper floor being used for a Masonic Hall. The building was remodeled in 1915 when the annex was added." According to the Louisiana Conference (organized in 1847), pastors of Holly Grove Church during the 1800's were: Daniel Watkins - 1849; Rev. Goodwin - 1850; P. P. Mathis - 1851; T. J. McLendon - 1856-1857; Rev. Coarsed - 1856-1857; Rev. McReary - 1858; Rev. Griswell - 1860; W. D. Staton - 1862; Rev. Moore - 1863-4; J. M. Franklin - 1865-1868, 1871; R. H. Holiday - 1885, 1899-1900; J. C. Cornline - 1887, 1890-1892; T. R. Wimberly - 1888; Robert Hurst - 1889; R. T. Wright - 1893; J. H. Stafford - 1894; H. C. Murphy - 1895-1897; and Joshua Sanders - 1898. * * * * * Tombstone inscriptions were recorded from the gate near the western parking lot, in rows from front to back in zigzag fashion by Mary Parker Partain and Jane Parker McManus, October 1993. When the inscriptions were originally recorded in 1973 by Jane P. McManus, several tombstones were recorded at that time but were not located in 1993. In other cases, although every effort was made to decipher the inscriptions, some of the old stones were almost completely worn away. In those instances, they are unreadable or unmarked and will not be listed here.
