McManus Cemetery - Vernon Parish, Louisiana Submitted by Jane McManus ********************************************** Copyright. Proceed 1.5 miles and turn right (North) on a dirt trail (just opposite the Martin-O'banion Road on the left), just before the Korean Presbyterian Church. This property is leased, and there is a barb-wire gate over the road. I would not recommend anyone try to find this cemetery without a guide, as it is in the middle of the woods with no real landmarks to point the way. My guide on this day was Elton Jackson, Jr. of Leesville, who researched the location in advance, and led me approximately .5 miles through the woods. The McManus Cemetery was apparently once a family graveyard on the McManus property. Today it is located on the backside of a 40-acre plot, behind the Korean Presbyterian Church. Although there is a dirt trail that leads to a large open area, there is no distinct road to the cemetery itself. It is underneath a large oak tree on a slight rise, just beyond this clearing. When approaching the clearing, there are two groups of cedar trees with an opening between the two that gradually slopes upward. Ignore the opening here, and go to the left side of the left group of cedar trees. A short distance from this point is a large oak tree (the only large oak in the area) on the right. This oak tree is in one corner of the cemetery. An old wire fence surrounds the small cemetery, but it has collapsed in several places. There are four concrete post holders, one in each corner that indicates where the original fence must have been. An iron gate with word "McManus Cemetery" on top is still attached, although there was a pine tree that had fallen across the entrance the day we visited. Inside the fenced area, there were several large magnolia trees, many pine trees about 6 feet tall, and so much brush and briars it was difficult to find the graves. Tombstone inscriptions recorded as approached 29 March 1996 by Jane P. McManus, with assistance from Elton Jackson. Submitted on August 9, 2000.
