Merritt Cemetery (Ft. Polk) - Vernon Parish Louisiana Submitted by Jane P. McManus ********************************************** Copyright. All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** This small abandoned cemetery is actually located on the Peason Ridge Artillery Range, a part of Ft. Polk property. From the traffic light in the center of Hornbeck, turn East onto Hwy 392. Continue on this road several miles to the gate at Ft. Polk Military Reservation. If the gate is closed, you cannot enter with a vehicle. The gate is normally closed when maneuvers are being performed in the area. After passing the gate, as you approach a tower on the left, there is a small dirt road (path) that turns South (this is approximately 7.0 miles from the center of Hornbeck). Turn right here and go approximately 100 or 200 feet, and turn right again (west) onto another small dirt road. About 1/4 mile on an path, the road turns right (north) toward the Rifle Range. You can almost see the cemetery from this point. Tombstone inscriptions were recorded by Holman C. Merritt in 1994, and submitted by (jane_mcmanus@yahoo.com).
