Monk Hill/Roberts Cemetery, Vernon Parish Louisiana Submitted by Jane P. McManus ********************************************** Copyright. All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** This small cemetery is located on the South side of LA Hwy. 28 between Leesville and Alexandria, approximately three miles east of LA 465 junction. It is fenced, but overgrown with weeds and tall grass, and only one broken stone was visible in 1990. According to Bertha (Burns) Davis (b. 1909) who lived nearby and often played in the area as a young child, there were many burials in Monk Hill Cemetery, but they were all unmarked. She had been told by older folks in the area that the graves belonged to people who died on the wagon trail as they headed west. Duffy Gordy, who currently lives in this area where he spent his childhood, told us that this portion of the present day LA Hwy. 28 was built on top of the old Nolan Trace, and many people who were just passing through the area are buried here, including several who died of diphtheria. All of those graves are now lost, and there is no knowledge as to who they were. Duffy also remembered that the Stille Post Office was located in this area in the 1800's. A mill once operated just past this Monk Hill site on the left side just past Yellow Branch. There was even a school at Monk Hill, but the origin of the name itself is not known. Inscriptions recorded by Jane P. McManus, October 1990, and submitted 3 February 2000 (jane_mcmanus@yahoo.com). Roberts, G. W. - died 2? Mar 187? [1879] [marker is broken, but the year was 1879.] [George was accidentally killed while turkey hunting. His only child was Lonnie Roberts who married Will Poe.] [3 unmarked burials, 1 identified as]: Crawford, (?) White, [1st wife of Tom Crawford]
